The Secret to Getting Better at BJJ (That No One Talks About)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often called "the gentle art," but let’s be honest—it’s tough. You show up, you get smashed, you go home sore, and then you do it all over again. Progress can feel slow, and frustration is real.

But here’s the secret: the students who improve the fastest aren’t always the strongest or the most athletic. They’re the ones who know how to learn.

So, how do you learn BJJ better?

1. Show Up Consistently

It sounds simple, but this is the biggest key to success. Even if you don’t feel like you’re improving, every roll, every rep, and every class adds up. Trust the process.

2. Ask Questions (The Right Way)

Instead of asking, “How do I escape side control?” try, “What’s the first thing I should do when I’m stuck here?” A focused question will get you a much better answer.

3. Train With Purpose

Rolling is fun, but don’t just "survive" every round. Pick one technique or concept and try to apply it. Fail? Try again. Learning happens in the struggle.

4. Don’t Ignore the Basics

White belts want to roll like black belts. But the truth is, black belts are just REALLY good at the basics. Drill the fundamentals until they become second nature.

5. Keep a Journal

After class, write down what you learned, what worked, and what didn’t. You’ll be surprised how much faster you improve when you track your progress.

6. Control Your Ego

You will lose. You will tap. You will struggle. The faster you accept that, the faster you’ll grow. Getting caught is just another way to learn.

Final Thought

Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about who wins in training. It’s about who keeps showing up, keeps learning, and keeps getting better.

So keep coming back. Keep learning. Keep rolling. You’re already better than you were yesterday.
